Communications Officer

Position: Communications Officer(Alternate titles: Communications Coordinator; VP Communications; Director of Communications;Communications Director)

Location: Ottawa, Canada

Salary: unpaid; voluntary

Number of hours: Variable depending on position; 1-3 hours/week

Position overview

As part of the executive leadership team, the Communications Officer is responsible for developing and maintaining the communications infrastructure of EWB Ottawa while also creating and implementing an overall branding/communications strategy. General involvement/participation in EWB Ottawa Chapter activities that are not necessarily part of the regular position duties is expected (i.e. Annual fundraiser, member learning, etc.)

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that Executive and Leadership team values and actively plays a role in executing the

Communications Strategy of the Chapter

  • Lead the development of and operationalize the Chapter Communications Strategy
  • Managing the Chapter communication outlets: website, newsletter (MailChimp), Facebook, Twitter
  • Updating and maintaining the EWB Ottawa chapter website including main page banner + content
  • Coordinating content and sending monthly newsletters to EWB Ottawa mailing list
  • Ensuring that all external messaging through all forms of communication (e.g. print, video, social) is consistent with the vision, attitude, values and beliefs of the Chapter and of EWB
  • Providing communications reports once a month outlining impact of communications and marketingefforts across all categories (web, newsletter, social, etc)Issuing certificates of appreciation and ‘Thank You’ letters to friends and donors of EWB.
  • Increase the number of visitors by analysis metrics via Google Analytics
  • Develop the blog section of the website with the addition of ‘guest bloggers’ or contributors to engage community with interesting analysis and information on EWB programs/activities and international development/relations in general (including overseas EWB staff/volunteers)
  • Continue to improve the look/design and navigation of the newsletter
  • Use of analytics within MailChimp to identify how to increase number of people who view newsletters, how to increase traffic to various links, etc.
  • Emphasize and market EWB Ottawa as a portal for discussions; strategically use social media as a tool to engage with the Ottawa community and connect with members
  • Focus on catalyzing discussions rather than posting news/info/events. Get users involved. Ask questions.
  • Identify more effective marketing and communications strategies to get Ottawa community/members actively involved
  • Ensure continued and effective use of the Chapter’s cloud-based services (Google Drive) to improve coordination and facilitate information sharing


This position does not require any specific experience, however it is considered an asset if the candidate has any of the following experience:

  • Web/Graphics design
  • Academic background and/or experience in journalism/communications
  • Community outreach and engagement
  • Marketing
  • Prior EWB-related involvement (student/city chapter, national office, social change fellow, etc)
